Liverpool v Sheffield UTD betting preview

Liverpool are unbeaten in 50 Premier League home games, winning 40 of these

Liverpool brought a memorable 2019 to a close with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wolves, a result which stretched Jurgen Klopp's men unbeaten streak in the topflight to 36. A dominance that has seen them stretch their lead at the top of the league table to 13 points with a game in-hand. Liverpool have a perfect record with newly-promoted sides in their recent history, having won all 11 home games under Klopp with an aggregate score of 33-4. Plus, the Merseysiders have kept a clean sheet in their last 4 matches.

Jurgen Klopp resisted wholesale changes at the weekend but will surely look to bring in fresh legs here. Xherdan Shaqiri has joined Liverpool's list of absentees with a hamstring injury, a list that includes Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho, Nathaniel Clyne and Rhian Brewster.
Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah were handed starts in all four fixtures in Gameweeks 18-21 last season and the regular front three have been immune to rotation so far this Christmas. Divock Origi provide a viable alternative should Klopp decide to rest one of the front trio. Naby Keita could return to the fold after starting from the bench against Wolves, with Adam Lallana the most likely to drop out despite impressing. Takumi Minamino will not be eligible to feature following his move from Red Bull Salzburg.

Sheffield United's long standing unbeaten record away from home came to an end on Sunday

Sheffield UTD are this season's surprise package and were unfortunate to go down 2-0 at Manchester City last time out. The Blades were arguably the better side in the first half and were left to grumble about VAR after Lys Mousset’s strike was chalked off for a tight offside. That was their first defeat on the road this season in Premier League and only their second in their last 13 league outings. Chris Wilder's side comfortably sit 8th in the top-flight table and are 11 points clear of the relegation zone. Should they win this clash, they will leapfrog Wolves, Tottenham and Man UTD and settle in 5th position! The Blades have the joint-highest number of clean sheets in the Premier League with seven. They lost the reverse fixture against Liverpool 1-0 at home earlier this season.

John Lundstram failed a fitness test prior to their defeat to Man City on Sunday and remains a doubt here. Muhamed Besic will be on standby to deputise if Lundstram fails to recover. Simon Moore is their only other injury concern, although the likes of David McGoldrick and Oli McBurnie could return having been rested last time out. Billy Sharp is another option in attack, while Ben Osborn and Luke Freeman are rested alternatives further back. No changes are expected in the three man backline as Chris Basham, John Egan and Jack O'Connell are expected to feature from the off.
