Belgium v Panama betting preview

Belgium have been in great form coming into the tournament

Belgium are among the favourites with one of the most talented squads at the tournament. Roberto Martinez's men were the first European team to qualify with 22 points from the first eight games. The Red Devils broke all sorts of records in qualifying: they were unbeaten and got 28 points from 10 games, scorin an impressive 43-goal tally. Belgium’s last defeat came to Spain just a couple of months after Euro 2016 ended, and it remains Roberto Martinez’ only loss as manager of Belgium. This year in friendly matches Belgium have beaten Saudi Arabia 4-1, Egypt 3-0 and most recently Costa Rica 4-1.

Belgium have defenders Thomas Vermaelen and Vincent Kompany missing for the game. As a result, Spurs defensive duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Aldeweireld are both likely to start. Dedryck Boyata should complete the trio at the heart of the backline. Axel Witsel looks set to get the nod ahead of Mousa Dembele in the middle of the park alongside Kevin De Bruyne with Thomas Meunier and Yannick Carrasco playing as wing backs. Up front, Dries Mertens and Eden Hazard are expected to flank Romelu Lukaku as Michy Batshuayi is a fitness concern.

Panama will be up against the ropes from the off

Panama reached the World Cup finals for the first time courtesy of a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Costa Rica in their final qualifier. They did so with a negative goal difference as well. Their World Cup preparation hasn't been ideal, with just one win in their last five and many defeats. These losses came against Iran, Denmark, Switzerland, and Norway. The most worrying is their 6-0 battering at the hands of Switzerland in March. It’s hard to imagine that Panama’s defences go to stay with a clean sheet for very long into this fixture

Panama have six players with over 100 international caps to their name but they only have four Europe-based players in their ranks. The main problem for Hernan Gomez is the physical condition of the vital center back Roman Torres. He also has to make the decision of whether he will be using Blas Perez (37-year-old) or Gabriel Torres as the lone striker. The five man backline will probably include Murillo, Machado Escobar and Ovalle while Gomez, Godoy, Barcenas and Avila will start in midfield.
