BELGIUM v SPAIN BETTING PREVIEW
Belgium underachieved under a poor coach in Wilmots at Euro 2016 despite possessing a number of top class players. They lost to Italy by a 2-0 score in their first group match at the Euros, but they went on to whip the Republic Ireland 3-0, slay Sweden 1-0 to set up a Round of 16 bout with Hungary, whom they walloped 4-0 before to suffer a blooody defeat at the hands of Wales at the quarter-final stage. Belgium will face the likes of Cyprus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Estonia, Gibraltar and Greece in their World Cup qualifiers.Belgium’s new coach Roberto Martinez, who will be assisted by Thierry Henry, will have all the big guns at his disposal, including Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Michy Batshuayi. Anyway, Marouane Fellaini has been dropped while Thorgan Hazard and Steven Defour have been recalled. Axel Witsel and Radja Nainggolan may anchor the midfield, though Mousa Dembele and Steven Defour are options.
Spain deeply underwhelmed in exiting Euro 2016 in the first knock-out round. La Roja beat 1-0 the Czech Republic in their Euro 2016 opening match prior to a 3-0 routing of Turkey. Anyway, they were found out by Croatia (losing 2-1) before slumping to a 2-0 loss to Italy in the round of 16 match. Whether Julen Lopetegui, who is Vicente del Bosque’s successor for La Roja, will decide to bring a new style of play to the Spain team remains to be seen, but it’s quite likely considering their struggles in France.
Julen Lopetegui has left out Iker Casillas, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro Rodriguez while Juan Mata and Diego Costa have both earned recalls. Alvaro Morata can be expected to lead the attack with Nolito and David Silva on his flanks. The likes of Koke, Busquets and Thiago Alcantara are expected to start in the middle of the park. Andres Iniesta is out with a bruised knee and has also hinted at retirement.
