The pressure is on Brazil to deliver in St Petersburg

Brazil must make amends for their 1-1 draw with Switzerland as Philippe Coutinho's long-range stunner was cancelled out by a Steven Zuber header. The Seleçao created 21 opportunities and had the majority of possession but not many could argue that they deserved to win that game. Failure to win again would leave Tite's men in a precarious position. Brazil have won 9 of the ten matches they have ever contested against Costa Rica, with their only defeat coming back in 1960.

Neymar had missed two training sessions ahead of his team's next match and is a major doubt. His absence could see Coutinho pushed into a more advanced role and Renato Augusto start in midfield. Another option in the middle of the park is Fernandinho who came off the bench against Switzerland. Furthermore, Roberto Firmino is expected to replace Gabriel Jesus upfront. No changes are expected in defense where Miranda, Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Danilo are likely to retain their starting berth.

Costa Rica wasn't anywhere near the same level of Brazil 2014

Costa Rica face an uphill struggle in their bid to progress to the next round of the World Cup after their 1-0 loss to Serbia. They were second best for the majority of the game and were fortunate to only lose by a one-goal margin. That defeat brought an end to a five-game unbeaten run at the World Cup, having only been eliminated in 2014 on penalties having drawn with Netherlands after normal and extra time. Anyway, the Centre Americans have now lost seven of their last nine matches, with their victories coming against Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Costa Rica head coach Óscar Ramírez may make one change to the XI that started last time out. Christian Bolanos could come in for Johan Venegas, joining Bryan Ruiz in the offensive duo behind the lone striker Marco Urena. Former Arsenal player Joel Campbell provide a viable alternative upfront. The likes of Christian Gamboa and Francisco Calvo will play as wing backs, while Johnny Acosta, Giancarlo Gonzalez and Oscar Duarte will feature form the off as centre backs.
