Colombia finished top of their group despite losing the opening game

Colombia suffered a 2-1 opening defeat at the hands of Japan and almost comprimised their World Cup campaign. Following that, Los Cafeteros played superbly to win 3-0 against Poland and edged a 1-0 success over Senegal. Josè Pekerman's men passed the group only third time in their history, the second consecutive following the impressive run they’ve had four years ago in Brazil. Los Cafeteros will certainly have chances to fire past a defence that is yet to keep a clean sheet in Russia. By contrast, Colombia have kept 4 clean sheets in their last five outings.

Jose Pekerman has huge issues with the fitness of his stalwart James Rodriguez who is likely to be left out of the starting line-up once again. Miguel Borja and Abel Aguilar also face late fitness tests. Wilmar Barrios will hope to start, though Jose Pekerman may continue with Mateus Uribe and Carlos Sanchez at the base of the midfield in a 4-2-3-1 setup. Up front, Radamel Falcao will lead the line, while Luis Muriel, Juan Cuadrado and Juan Quintero will form the offensive midfield trio.

After back to back wins against Tunisia (2-1) and Panama (6-1), England suffered a 1-0 defeat to Belgium in their final group game in what was essentially a reserves’ match. The Three Lions have never lost to Colombia in their five previous meetings, winning three times and drawing two. Should Southgate’s boys eliminate Los Cafeteros, they will be up against either Sweden or Switzerland on the way to the semi-final.

Gareth Southgate will revert to a full strength side after resting eight players against Belgium. John Stones is a doubt with a calf issue having been forced off last time out. Fabian Delph will be available for this meeting despite returning to England as his wife is due to give birth. Anyway, the big calls concern whether or not to recall Raheem Sterling and whether Ruben Loftus-Cheek can keep the fit again Dele Alli out of the team.
