Harry Maguire is in contention to make his United debut after a full pre-season with Leicester. Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof should complete the backline. Paul Pogba is a doubt after missing the final pre-season game with a back problem, so Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic could be the preferred duo in midfield. Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford look sure to start up front. Daniel James and Jesse Lingard have generally been preferred in the remaining two positions this summer but Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira and Mason Greenwood provide further options. Eric Bailly is a long-term absentee. Alexis Sanchez, Matteo Darmian and Joel Pereira also look out of contention.
N'Golo Kante managed to take part in Chelsea's final pre-season game and should join Jorginho in the middle of the park. The departure of David Luiz means that Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen look primed to start the season at centre-half, since Antonio Rudiger is a major doubt. Pedro and Christian Pulisic are expected to start as wingers, so t he tough call appears to be in the number ten slot, with Ross Barkley and Mason Mount having tussled for that role throughout the summer. There is plenty of competition up front, too, with Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud options, but Tammy Abraham should feature from the off. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi are the long-term absentees.
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Christensen, Emerson; Jorginho, Kovacic; Pedro, Barkley, Pulisic; Abraham

Man UTD have won their opening Premier League game in each of the past four seasons
Manchester United are still looking to recover from the Ferguson-era with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the latest to try to add silverware at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have strenghtened their backline with the signings of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, while Romelu Lukaku, Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera are the club's major departees. Their preseason has been positive as they have won 5 of their 6 friendlies. As to direct encounters, Manchester United have won just two of their last 13 Premier League meetings with Chelsea - losing five and drawing six across that period.Harry Maguire is in contention to make his United debut after a full pre-season with Leicester. Frank Lampard begins his reign as Chelsea manager aftern an impressive preseason
Chelsea slunk into third place last season, capitalising on late-season collapses from Tottenham and Arsenal. Lampard's men have enjoyed an entertaining summer as they beat Barcelona (2-1), Reading (4-3) and Salzburg (5-3), while their final clash saw them play out a 2-2 draw with Borussia M’gladbach. The Blues have been restricted in the transfer market due to the their ban and must make up the large deficit felt by the summer exit of superstar Eden Hazard. Their talisman for so many years is finally gone, and deadline day saw them sell David Luiz to Arsenal. As to direct matches, Chelsea have not won any of their last six matches away to Manchester United though four of those games have ended in a draw.N'Golo Kante managed to take part in Chelsea's final pre-season game and should join Jorginho in the middle of the park.
