Manchester UTD start the new campaign a week later than most teams because of their participation in the latter stages of the last Europa League in August. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ended last season with a run of 14 unbeaten matches. Their last outing was 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sevilla in the Europa League semifinal. They have only played a friendly since then, narrowly losing 1-0 to Aston Villa.

Crystal Palace kicked off the new season in style, recording a a 1-0 victory over Southampton at Selhurst Park on Saturday courtesy of a strike from Wilfried Zaha. Prior to that, Roy Hodgson's men beat 2-1 Oxford UTD, 3-0 Charlton and 1-0 Millwall in club friendlies, before sharing the spoils 1-1 against Brondby in the last pre-season outing. The Eagles were beaten 2-1 at the Theatre of Dreams last term.
