Nigeria need a draw to secure a place in the knockout rounds

Nigeria bounced back from a disappointing 2-0 loss to Croatia in their opening match when they saw off Iceland 2-0 last time out, courtesy of Ahmed Musa's brace. The Super Eagles currently occupy second spot in Group D behind Croatia. Victory here would definitely see Nigeria through whilst a draw would be enough if Iceland fail to beat Croatia. Defeat would see Nigeria head home. Their confidence will be further boosted by the 4-2 victory they claimed over Argentina in a friendly last November.

Head coach Gernot Rohr is expected to confirm the 3-5-2 strategy which worked perfectly on Friday against Iceland. Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho will probable spearhead the attack once again, with Odion Ighalo main alternative. Kenneth Omerou was brought into the back-trio last time out and he should retain his berth at the back alongside Balogun and Trost-Ekong. Former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel is a doubt with a hand injury but we expect him to feature form the off.

Argentina have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons

Argentina are on the verge of an embarrassing early exit from Russia 2018 after collecting just one point from their first two games. The Albiceleste opened their World Cup campaign with a disappointing 1-1 against Iceland and were hammered 3-0 by Croatia last time out, a game which was level at 0-0 at half time. They are not dead and buried just yet because Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Iceland on Friday night blew Group D wide open once again. Messi & co. absolutely need to win, as a draw would be enough if the result of Croatia v Nigeria goes their way.

Sampaoli will likely re-shift to the strategy used against Iceland. Franco Armani, Ever Banega, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain could come in for Willy Caballero, Marcos Acuna, Maximiliano Meza and Sergio Aguero. Paolo Dybala in a valid back up alternative in attack. In midfield, Javier Mascherano will be probably flanked by Enzo Perez and Ever Banega. In defense, Gabriel Mercado will partner Nicolas Otamendi as centre back, while Eduardo Salvio and Nicolas Tagliafico will start as right and full back respectively.
