Nigeria v Iceland betting preview

Nigeria have lost four of their last five outings

Nigeria struggled in their opening group match and had few excuses in going down 2-0 to Croatia. It took them an hour to register the first of 2 shots on target. They need a positive result here to improve their chances of securing a last-16 spot here. Their form is really poor - the Super Eagles have lost four of their last five outings in all competitions and are on a 3 match losing run at the World Cup (considering also the 2014 campaign in Brazil). Furthermore, Nigeria have failed to find the net in six of their last 11 matches at the World Cup.

Leon Balogun came through the opening match unscathed and should start here once more. As a result, Nigerian head coach Gernot Rohr could name the same XI that started the Croatia match, altough Kelechi Iheanacho is pushing to start in attack in place of Odion Ighalo. Another change could see the former Lazio man Ogenyi Onazi taking Oghenekaro Etebo’s place as the defensive midfielder alongside Wilfried Ndidi. The likes of Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Alex Iwobi are likely to retain their berth as offensive midfielders.

Iceland have already made a big impression in Russia

Iceland picked up a point from their debut appearance against Argentina, with Alfred Finnbogason cancelling out Sergio Aguero's early strike. Goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson was the hero of the match as he saved a Lionel Messi penalty. Their defence was ultra disciplined and despite seeing just 22% of possession Iceland held on for a point. Five of Iceland’s last six competitive games have seen fewer than three goals as well.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson is out with a calf problem, with Rurik Gislason expected to deputise. Other than that, we don't expect any change from head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson. This means that Gylfi Sigurdsson will play behind the lone striker Alfred Finnbogason in a 4-4-1-1 starting system. Kari Arnason and Ragnar Sigurdsson make the rock-solid pair at the centre-back, with Magnusson and Saeversson as full backs. The likes of Hallfredssom Gunnarson and Bjarnason will be confirmed in the middle of the park.
