MANNY PACQUIAO v JESSIE VARGAS: BETTING PREVIEW
Manny Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38KOs) didn’t show any ill effects from his shoulder surgery against Timothy Bradley to close out their trilogy in what was supposed to be Pacman's last fight in April. It was Pacman's first fight since a points defeat to Floyd Mayweather 12 months prior. Pacquaio looked sharp in his last fight, as the quickness and ability to control the ring are still there, but he is obviously not nearly as consistent or dominant as he has been in the past.
"Pacman" is one of the most exciting offensive fighters of all time. He throws explosive, multi-punch combinations. His style depends on athleticism, and that kind of style usually does not age well. He has not stopped an opponent (Miguel Cotto) in more than six years. In 11 subsequent bouts (three defeats) he has notched only points victories. Furthermore, as a full-time Senator in his native Philippines his training has taken a more part-time role for this fight.
Jessie Vargas has an impressive record of 27-1 along with 10 KOs. He won the WBA Junior Welterweight Crown in April of 2014 against Khabib Allakhverdiev and defended it twice against Antonio DeMarco and Anton Novikov before meeting Bradley in a fight he lost by unanimous decision. He is on the rise again after taking the WBO belt from up-and-coming American Sadam Ali in a ninth-round technical knockout last March..
Vargas in younger, taller and enjoys a significant reach advantage over the Filipino, but Pacquiao has defeated better fighters with similar dimensions. He has turned his overhand right into a one-punch weapon seemingly out of nowhere, using it to stop Ali in March and badly hurt Bradley late in Round 12 in 2015. The American has shown in the past that he has a pretty solid chin, but has been down before from a body shot. His track record against opponents such as Bradley, or even Josesito Lopez, suggests that he is a notch or two below Pacquiao in talent.
