Portugal’s recent form has been poor as of late but they have plenty of talent at their disposal

Portugal enter the UEFA Nations League on the back of an uninspiring World Cup in Russia this summer. They got through the group stages in 2nd place after winning one and drawing two but were knocked out of the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Uruguay in the round of 16 stage. They battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Croatia in their first game since that defeat last weekend. As to direct encounters, Portugal boast a very poor record against Italy with just one win in their last 12 against them.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of the squad as well as  Joao Mario, Joao Moutinho and Bruno Alves. Andre Silva is set to lead the line again, with namesake Bernardo Silva and Gonçalo Guedes flanking the former AC Milan striker. Benfica's Pizzi and Leipzig's winger Bruma missed out on World Cup selection but could feature at some stage. William Carvalho will anchor the midfield as usual, supported by Renato Sanches and Bruno Fernandes with Wolves' Ruben Neves providing a viable alternative. The likes of Pepe, Neto, Joao Cancelo and Raphael Guerreiro will form the four man backline.

Italy have not won in three games and in seven of their last eight outings

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia this summer and opened their UEFA Nations League competition with 1-1 draw at home against Poland, with Chelsea’s Jorginho salvaging a late point from the penalty spot. It was Roberto Mancini's first competitive game as manager of the Italian national side. Italy have won four of the last five meetings between the two sides but Portugal came out on top in their most recent encounter.

Roberto Mancini, who is still searching for his best XI and formation, is likely to change his front line, with Lorenzo Insigne, Mario Balotelli and Federico Bernardeschi expected to dropping on the bench. Giacomo Bonaventura and Marco Benassi will hope for promotions to the starting XI while Federico Chiesa and Ciro Immobile are sure starters up front. Domenico Berardi and Andre Belotti are further offensive options. Jorginho and Roberto Gagliardini should retain their starting berth in the middle of the park, while Domenico Criscito should replace Cristiano Biraghi in defense.
