Manchester United v Chelsea Betting Preview
Manchester United sacked manager Erik ten Hag after last weekend's 2-1 defeat at West Ham. The team currently sit in 14th place - the club’s worst start in modern Premier League history. The Red Devils recorded a big 5-2 over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman will continue to keep the Old Trafford hot seat warm for incoming manager Ruben Amorim this weekend.
Chelsea currently sit in fifth in the table and challenging for a spot in the Champions League next season. They are just a point behind Arsenal and Aston Villa, who sit in third and fourth place, respectively. The Blues have faced Newcastle twice in the last week, beating the Magpies 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the league last Sunday but were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in midweek as they lost 2-0 at St.James' Park. Overall, Enzo Maresca's men have fared well since a defeat in the season opener at the hands of Man City, emerging victorious from five of the subsequent eight fixtures and only losing narrowly at Liverpool a fortnight ago.
Chelsea are winless in the last 11 Premier League matches at Old Trafford. The last Old Trafford match-up between the Reds and Blues came in December last year, where Scott McTominay scored a brace in a 2-1 Man UTD victory. The Blues beat the Red Devils 4-3 in April at Stamford Bridge, with the Londoners scoring twice in stoppage time.
Best Odds
The top football betting sites can split these two teams, offering a best price of around 8/5 (2.60) on both the home and away win. The draw is backable at 29/10 (3.90).
Probable Line-Ups
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Casemiro, Ugarte; Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund
Harry Maguire, Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo are all out through injury, and have joined long-term absentees Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Leny Yoro on the sidelines. Christian Eriksen is a major doubt because of an ankle injury and is expected to miss the game. There could be recalls for Rasmus Hojlund and Noussair Mazraoui, with Joshua Zirkzee and Victor Lindelof possibly dropping down to the bench. Andre Onana replaces Altay Bayindir in goal while Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte will anchor the midfield.
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Fofana, Colwill, Gusto; Caicedo, Lavia; Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson
Chelsea will be without the services of Jadon Sancho who is cup-tied against his parent club. Christopher Nkunku and Pedro Neto are in contention to replace the Englishman, while Romeo Lavia is expected to partner Moises Caicedo in the middle of the park. Noni Madueke and Cole Palmer will complete the offensive trio behind the striker Nicolas Jackson. At the back, Reece James played for a full 90 minutes in 18 months last Sunday, and he is expected to feature from the off. Malo Gusto, Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana will complete the four man backline.
Our Manchester United v Chelsea Predictions
Man UTD recorded an impressive win in midweek over Leicester but they have won only two of their last eight top-flight games and scored just 8 goals in 9 league fixtures so far. Of course, caretaker manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy cannot fix Man United's offensive and defensive problems overnight.
Chelsea have lost only once on the road in the League but they have a poor record at Old Trafford, having failed to win a game since 2013. Moreover, the Blues are without a clean sheet in seven matches across all competitions.
There were seven goals scored when these two sides last met and another high-scoring game is on the cards. We back the 2-2 draw and the "Both teams to score" option.
As for player betting, we recommend Alejandro Garnacho to have a shot on target and Romeo Lavia to commit 1+ fouls.
