RUSSIA v PORTUGAL BETTING PREVIEW
Russia are the only team who managed to win their opening match and therefore sit at the top of the group as they beat Anthony Hudson’s New Zealand 2-0 at the Stadion Krestovskyi in St.Petersburg. They could have won by a bigger margin if they had taken their chances well. Courtesy of that win, the hosts have now extended their unbeaten run to four games. Anyway, they have gone W3 D2 L2 in their last six games, with the defeats coming against Qatar and the Ivory Coast in friendly matches. Russia failed to do much of anything at Euro 2016 and have tried to ring in the changes with more flair and creativity coming in, but they still look like a work in progress. The last time these two teams met was in an International Friendly back in 2015 at Stadion Kuban in Krasnodar and the clash ended in a goalless draw.Fyodor Smolov and Dmitry Poloz are expected to lead the line again in a 5-3-2 starting formation in which Yuri Zhirkov and Aleksandr Samedov will play as wing backs. Experienced goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev will defend the goal while the three centre backs should be Vasin, Kudryashov and Shishkin. In midfield, Denis Glushakov, Aleksandr Golovin and Aleksandr Yerokhin are expected to feature from the off.
Portugal were moments away from opening their campaign with a win against Mexico, only for Hector Moreno to snatch a 91st-minute 2-2 leveller. That draw makes it seven wins, one draw, and two defeats for Portugal since they lifted the trophy in Paris last summer. They have scored an incredible 35 goals in these ten games but they have been a bit shaky in defense.
Gelson Martins and new AC Milan signing Andre Silva only came on as subs against Mexico, and Bernardo Silva did not play at all, but they could all start this clash. Ricardo Quaresma should keep his place after scoring the opener. No changes are expected at the back where Raphael Guerreiro, Pepe, Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares should play in front of the goal defended by Rui Patricio. The likes of William Carvalho and Joao Moutinho will start as playmakers in the middle of the park.
