SWITZERLAND vs NORTHERN IRELAND BETTING PREVIEW
Switzerland made a giant step towards the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia with a 1-0 win in Belfast, scoring the winning goal from a penalty that should not have been awarded. Anyway, they completely outplayed their opponents and are now expected to finish the job on home soil. Vladimir Petkovic’s side won nine of their 10 group games, with their only defeat coming to European champions Portugal on the final night of that qualifying phase. The Rossocrociati boasted a perfect record of five wins from five games at home, keeping a clean sheet in four of those matches.
Steven Zuber and Denis Zakaria, who got the nod over Admir Mehmedi and Remo Freuler respectively in the first leg, are expected to retain their starting berth. Valon Behrami is unlikely to be risked given the good result from the first leg while Haris Seferovic and Breel Embolo are in contention for the lone striker berth. Blerim Dzemaili and Xherdan Shaqiri look sure starters in the offensive midfield while the likes of Stephan Lichtsteiner, Fabian Schar, Ricardo Rodriguez and Manuel Akanji will feature from the off in defense.
Northern Ireland failed to make home advantage count and have now few chances of reaching the World Cup. Michael O'Neill's men have lost their last three matches now and goalscoring has never been their strong point. They won only two of their five away matches in their World Cup qualifying group. Furthermore, Switzerland have lost at home just twice - both times to England - since 2001 in a run stretching back 17 games. Plus, no European team has ever advanced through the World Cup play-offs after losing the first leg at home.
Veteran trio Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, and Chris Brunt are expected to start at the back again. Stuart Dallas is a major doubt after he was forced off with injury early on in the first leg, with Jamie Ward in line to replace the Leeds winger. Corry Evans is banned after picking up the second yellow card. George Saville replaced the Blackburn man on Thursday and is in line to step into the starting XI. Kyle Lafferty will lead the line up front.
