Tour De France Stage 16 predictions, betting tips, odds and free bets (July 18, 2017)

Stage 16, a 165km run from Le Puy-en-Velay to Romans-sur-Isère, is a true transitional stage on the flat roads of the Rhône valley, at the foot of the Alps. It will be the penultimate chance for the sprinters to grab a win before the final stage into Paris. TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 16 BETTING PREVIEW 

Soon after the start, the riders face the Category 3 Côte du Boussoulet, which should provide the perfect opportunity for the breakaway to establish itself. The Col du Rouvey comes after 65km from the start, but it's only 2.8km long and there are almost 100km to go.

• Km 20.5 – Côte de Boussoulet 4.5 kilometre-long climb at 6.3% – category 3
• Km 65.0 – Col du Rouvey 2.8 kilometre-long climb at 5.6% – category 4

Hence, there is enough time for the teams to bring it all back together before the finale through the Rhone Valley where crosswinds are a very real possibility to break up the peloton. Furthermore, with the day’s intermediate sprint just 45km from the finish line, there might be lots of points available in the green jersey competition

Marcel Kittel can essentially wrap-up the competition with a sixth stage victory as he is clearly the fastest sprinter at the moment.

Michael Matthews might go on the attack in the hopes of winning both the intermediate sprint and the stage as Team Sunweb will look to make Kittel suffer on the early climbs.



In case of bunch sprint, don't rule out Dylan Groenewegen, who is hunting for that first GT win, and Edwald Boasson Hagen, who almost beat Kittel last week. Few chances for the likes of Alexander Kristoff, Andre Greipel and Dan McLay.

Nacer Bouhanni has a double option - wait for the bunch sprint in which he could earn a podium or follow other escapees - as well as John Degenkolb and Sonny Colbrelli.

In case of breakaway and crosswinds, the most fancied riders are Greg Van Avermaet, Steve Cummings, Philippe Gilbert, Stefan Kung, Thomas De Gendt, Oliver Naesen, Thomas Voeckler, Tony Martin and Davide Cimolai.

With two hard days in the Alps up next, expect the Tour’s GC battle to take the day off as men like Chris Froome, Fabio Aru, Romain Bardet, and Rigoberto Uran use the stage to get themselves ready for the climbing to come.
