Uruguay v Portugal betting preview

Uruguay are set-piece specialists and rock solid in defense

Uruguay have been solid if unspectacular in the group stages of this 2018 World Cup tournament. After a 1-0 opening game win over Egypt, they beat Saudi Arabia with the same scoreline and recorded an emphatic 3-0 victory against Russia in the final group game. As a result, Uruguay have won their last 6 matches to nil and that record perhaps is enough to justify their status as very slight favourites here. Furthermore, all five of Uruguay's goals at the World Cup have come from dead ball situations so far.

Oscar Tabarez could ring the changes from the side that beat Russia 3-0 as he rested several players. Jose Gimenez is expected to recover from his injury to start at the back alongside Diego Godin. Sebastian Coates will take his place at the heart of the defensive line if Gimenez is to skip the match. The likes of Diego Laxalt and Lucas Torreira are expected to retain their starting spots, while Rodrigo Betancur should play behind the attacking duo formed by Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

Portugal are tournament specialists and showed to be difficult to beat in Group B

Portugal hardly set the world alight in Group B but we can't forget that they managed to win that competition despite not managing a single victory in the group stages of that competition in France. A late penalty conceded against Iran saw them forfeit top spot. They unconvincingly drew 1-1 against Iran. Prior to that, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to ensure his side took a 3-3 draw from neighbours Spain on their opening game and netted the solitary goal in the 1-0 victory over Morocco. Portugal have only lost one of their last 17 games at major tournaments, coming in the form of a 4-0 defeat to Germany back at the 2014 World Cup.

Joao Moutinho skipped the final game of the group stage due to illness, but is expected to feature here, with Adrien Silva making room in a four man midfield that will likely include William Carvalho in the middle, Ricardo Quaresma and Joao Mario out wide. Man City Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes provide further options. Up front, Andre Silva and Gonçalo Guedes are in contention to partner Cristiano Ronaldo. No changes are expected in defense, with Raphael Guerreiro, Josè Fonte, Pepe and Cedric Soares retaining their berths.
