Aston Villa vs Liverpool betting preview

Aston Villa ha lost each of their last three, conceding eight and scoring just two in the process

Aston Villa enter this match in poor form. They have suffereded a defeat in six of their last eight to drop to 17th in the Premier League table, with only goal difference keeping them out of the relegation zone.  After losing to Chelsea and Leicester, they were beaten 2-0 at Sheffield United last Saturday. With Liverpool set to deploy a second-string XI, the Villas have a fantastic opportunity to book their ticket in the penultimate stage of the EFL Cup. In the previous round of the Carabao Cup, the Villans trashed Crewe Alexandra in round two before back-to-back triumphs over Premier League opposition in Brighton and Wolves.

Dean Smith will be sweating over the fitness of Conor Hourihane, who faces a late fitness test after missing last time out. Tyrone Mings is also set to miss out, but Keinan Davis could make the matchday squad. Up front, Brazilian striker Wesley will be handed a rest ahead of the upcoming crunch match with Southampton, meaning that Anwar El Ghazi, Trezeguet and Jota will form the offensive trio. Jonathan Kodjia is another attacking option while Kienan Davis could also play at some stage. A number of fringe players such as Neil Taylor, Ezri Konsa and Henri Lansbury are expected to be given an opportunity, while Orjan Nyland could start in goal.

Liverpool have won their last six away matches against Aston Villa

Victims of their own success, Liverpool have suffered from a fixture scheduling nightmare with the Football League insisting this tie must be played in its usual slot, although it clashes with the Reds' schedule at the Club World Cup. Jurgen Klopp’s first team were given a tough work-out at this venue in the league last month, trailing for a long time and only shading a 2-1 victory. In the previous rounds of the competition, Liverpool recorded a 2-0 win at MK Dons or a 5-5 draw with Arsenal, when the Reds went through on penalties.

To describe Liverpool's likely starting lineup as experimental would be an understatement as the entire first team squad has travelled to Qatar to take part in the Club World Cup. Plus, two youngsters such as Curtis Jones and Neco Williams have been taken with the senior squad while Rhian Brewster is a major doubt. Under-23s manager Neil Critchley will take charge of a very different line-up for this fixture. Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever, plus midfielders Herbie Kane and Pedro Chirivella have been used in the past round and are expected to feature from the off.
