Brazil seem to be clicking into gear at just the right time

Brazil have been gradually improving at this World Cup and the 2-0 win over Serbia last time out suggests they are now warming up ahead of the start of the winner-takes-all knockout stage. Prior to that, the Seleçao drew 1-1 against Switzerland and managed to beat Costa Rica 2-0 with two very late goals. Furthermore, despite a strong defensive record in qualifying, Brazil did give their opponents opportunities in all of their group games.

Head coach Tite has huge issues with full-backs as Marcelo was forced to leave the pitch only ten minutes into the game with Serbia and the Real Madrid star is a major doubt as well as first choice right back Danilo. Douglas Costa is out injured, so Willian is expected to retain his berth in the offensive midfield trio alongside Neymar and Coutinho. Gabriel Jesus should lead the line once again, with Roberto Firmino providing a further option.

Mexico will trouble Brazil on the counter

Mexico started brilliantly by winning against Germany (1-0) and South Korea (2-1) but forfeited top spot in a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Sweden, coming perilously close to being eliminated at the group stages. They need to up their game now in order to harbour any hopes of springing another upset. Anyway, El Tri showed against the Germans that they play with no fear and are sure to provide a challenge considering they are lethal on counter attacks. Anyway, the Mexicans have never scored a goal against Brazil in four World Cup meetings, losing three of those matches 2-0, 4-0 and 5-0.

Hector Moreno is suspended after a booking against Sweden. Hugo Ayala should replace him and this could be Juan Carlos Osorio's sole change from the side the lost last time out. Hirving Lozano, Carlo Vela and Miguel Layun will support the lone striker Chicharito Hernandez as usual while Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado will anchor the midfield.
