CANELO ALVAREZ v GENNADY GOLOVKIN : BETTING PREVIEW
Alvarez has lost just the once in 51 fights when he was easily outpointed in 2013 by a composed Mayweather. He bounced back from the decision defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr – his only professional loss – by reeling off three stoppage victories, and he made it four-in-a-row when he took a decision win over Miguel Cotto. He was savage against British boxers Amir Khan and Liam Smith last year and so easily handled Julio Cesar Chavez Jr this year.
Canelo is one of the most gifted combination punchers in boxing and a better, more explosive combination puncher than Golovkin. A 67% knock-out ratio illustrates that the fiery Mexican also carries power in both hands as well as all-round boxing ability. He also possesses the quicker hands and superior defence on the inside and is greater at slipping and rolling shots than the champion.
Gennady Golovkin boasts a perfect 37-0 record with 33 stoppage successes and is the undisputed king of the middleweight and super-middleweight ranks. Last September, he needed only five rounds to dispatch welterweight champion Kell Brook - who suffered a broken right eye socket - but went to distance in his last fight against Daniel Jacobs, a bout that was much closer than many expected with the American claiming that the unbeaten Golovkin was only awarded the decision so that the Alvarez fight could happen.
Golovkin is distinguished for his hard-hitting style and boasts one of the most imposing knock-out records in boxing. The champion possesses a three-inch reach advantage and a one-inch benefit in height. GGG also possesses a superior jab to Canelo, he can dismantle foes on the end of it, as he did with dangerous puncher David Lemieux. Anyway, while the Kazakh is technically superb and is tough, his defence can be breached. He can be caught by uppercuts and tight shots in close. And that is exactly where Canelo excels.
