Arkle Chase Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds (Cheltenham 2024 - DAY 1)

The Arkle Novices' Chase is the champion two mile chase for novices. A race for the speedsters, with many former top hurdlers taking this route. The Arkle provides a total of twelve fences for the competitors to tackle which can be a tough ask for these novice chasers as the contest is generally run at a quick pace. Last year Willie Mullins' El Fabiolo justified 11/10 favoritism scoring an impressive 5 lengths victory. Who will win this year? ARKLE CHASE BETTING PREVIEW

Known as the Champion Chase for novices, the Arkle Trophy is one of the main races on day one of the Cheltenham Festival, boasting a prize fund of over £170,000. This race has been won in the past by the likes of Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop, Sizing Europe and Sprinter Sacre, all of whom went on to land the Champion Chase at subsequent Festivals. El Fabiolo cruised to a 5 lengths victory in 2023 for trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Townend, staying on powerfully ahead of old rival Jonbon, despite brushing through the final hurdle..

As with all other races on Day 1, the Arkle Novices' Chase is run left-handed on the Old Course at Cheltenham. It is open to novice chasers and is for five-year-olds and upwards.

And now we take a closer look at this year's Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Steeple Chase and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.

Who will win the Arkle Chase 2024?

ast year's Supreme Novices' winner MARINE NATIONALE was seen as an easy winner of this race for most of the season after he established himself as the best novice hurdler last year by winning all three of his hurdle starts. But this premise was blown to pieces when Willie Mullins' charge was well beaten behind Il Etait Temps in the Irish equivalent at the Dublin Racing Festival.

    IL ETAIT TEMPS
has now impressed twice at the Dublin Racing Festival, only to disappoint at Cheltenham. In each of the last 2 years, he has run fairly modestly at Prestbury Park but despite that he has been extremely well backed (20s into 5s). He proved no match for Gaelic Warrior last time when he finished second, but was impressive on his chase debut when beating Ho My Lord, and he has often produced his best form when ridden positively.

Willie Mullins has also entered GAELIC WARRIOR, despite the Turners Novices’ Chase looking like the main objective. His latest win earned him a sixth win from just eight starts since joining Willie, with his only two defeats coming at Cheltenham when second in the Boodles and the Ballymore.

JPR ONE has recently turned into a chaser capable of a really high level of form. On his chase debut, he defied market weakness to jump and travel all over two decent rivals on heavy ground at Newton Abbot. He also impressed both over the Arkle course and distance at Cheltenham back in November, and in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown Park. In both occasion he went very close to grab a win.

HUNTERS YARN runs for the same connections as last year’s winner El Fabiolo. He seems to have improved markedly for fences and would have won both his starts this season easily but for a last fence fall on debut.

    Looking for dark horses?

FOUND A FIFTY narrowly defeated to Il Etait Temps at the Dublin Racing Festival last time out. The seven-year-old saw off My Mate Mozzie by one-and-a-half lengths to win a two-mile Leopardstown Grade 1 novice over Christmas.

Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained horse MASTER CHEWY won on his chasing debut at Aintree back in October, as well as tasting victory in a Grade 2 Novices' Chase at Kempton over Christmas. He disappointed on his most recent outing at Lingfield when badly hampered at the first.

Henry De Bromhead’s QUILIXIOS, winner of the 2021 Triumph Hurdle, did all well at Naas last time out. If you’re looking for something against Marine Nationale, Qulixios could be the right one.

MY MATE MOZZIE is consistent and ran well in second, but he could only finish eighth in the County Hurdle last year when he had no excuses. He is just as good over fences, and could be a smart each-way option although improvement will be needed.
