FRANCE v NETHERLANDS BETTING PREVIEW
France suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sweden in June, with the Swedish team moving above Les Blues on goal difference. With four of the 10 rounds of matches remaining in Group A, the race to Russia is surprisingly tight. They are three points ahead of the Dutch, having posted a W4 D1 L1 record so far. If they can make the most of home advantage, it would leave the Oranje sweating in the qualification race. France, who edged a 1-0 out in Holland when the two met back in October last year, have not lost a competitive match at home in 90 minutes since March 2013.
In the absence of Benjamin Mendy, Layvin Kurzawa and Lucas Digne compete for the left-back spot. Samuel Umtiti and Laurent Koscielny should partner up at the back, with Raphael Varane sidelined. Blaise Matuidi and N'golo Kante will compete for a place in midfield alongside Paul Pogba while Olivier Giroud should lead the line, supported by Nabil Fekir, Antoine Griezmann and Thomas Lemar in the offensive midfielder positions. Ousmane Dembele has not been named after refusing to train at Borussia Dortmund in order to force through his move to Barcelona. The likes of Anthony Martial and Karim Benzema were also left out.
Netherlands actually look likely to finish below the top two qualifying places in Group A. Their big hit which they suffered was a defeat out in Bulgaria back in March. Anyway, Dick Advocaat took over last spring and the Oranjes recorded three good wins out of three so far. They bounced back at home against Luxembourg in June (5-0), and beat Morocco (1-2) and Cote d'Ivoire (5-0) in the most recent international friendlies.
The visitors are without Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Daryl Janmaat and Jeffrey Bruma in defence. Vincent Janssen's impressive international record could see him get the nod over Bas Dost and the returning Van Persie. He will be flanked by Memphis Depay and Arjen Robben, with Qincy Promes as first alternative. Marco Van Ginkel will join Kevin Strootman and Georginjo Wijnaldum in midfield, with Ajax youngster Donny van Beek hoping to make his debut at some stage.
