Iran v Spain betting preview

Iran were less convincing but ultimately more effective in their 1-0 win over Morocco

Iran scored late on to win their first game 1-0 against Morocco in their opening round. As a result they are sensationally top of Group B. Carlos Queiroz's men allowed Morocco 13 shots at goal in their clash and they only scored through a fortuitous goal. Their defence was extremely solid in qualifying, conceding just five goals in 18 matches. It will take a united performance on the pitch for Iran to cause one of the great World Cup shocks. The Iranians will try to keep things tight at the back, but they could struggle to stop Spain's tiki-taka style.

Iran look like sticking with their back four (Haji Safi, Cheshmi, Pouraliganji and Rezaeian) and is expected to be more cautious. Quieroz is unlikely to tinker with a winning team and that could see Ostersunds FK winger Saman Ghoddos kept in reserve. Captain Masoud Shojaei should keep his place in the starting lineup, despite being withdrawn during the second half against Iran while one of Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Vahid Amiri could be dropped out in favour of another defensive midfielder. Saeid Ezatolahi is back from suspension for Iran but may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Spain could see themselves in a battle with Portugal regarding goal difference

Spain trail Carlos Queiroz's men by two points following their 3-3 draw against Portugal on Friday. They had to come from 1-0 and 2-1 down before being denied victory by Ronaldo’s hat trick goal 2 minutes from the end. The Spaniards cannot afford to make any mistakes but having last lost nearly two years ago, we expect this game to go more comfortably than the draw with CR7 & co. Spain have scored at least two goals in 14 of their last 18 games, so they should be able to do it also here.

David De Gea will keep his starting place in the side despite his error that led to Cristiano Ronaldo's second goal. Dani Carvajal missed the draw with Portugal but the Real Madrid right-back may return to the starting eleven, replacing Nacho who scored a stunning goal. Saul Niguez may replace Koke in midfield while David Silva, Andres Iniesta and Isco are expected to support the lone forward Diego Costa upfront. Thiago Alcantara provide a further option as midfielder or offensive midfielder.
