This is arguably the bleakest period in the recent history of Italian football

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup this past summer. Since then they have fallen into a results crisis as they haven’t managed to win in the last four outings. Roberto Mancini's men kicked off their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Poland and suffered a 1-0 defeat in Portugal few days later. Prior to that, the Azzurri lost 3-1 at the hands of France and shared the spoils with Netherlands (1-1) in frienly matches last June. Defense is a concern as they conceded in the last eight occasions. The Azzuri have a fantastic historical record against Ukraine, winning 6 and losing none of the previous 7 meetings between the two sides.

Fit-again Marco Verratti returns alongside Alessandro Florenzi while Sebastian Giovinco has been recalled to the squad for the first time since 2015. Strikers Andrea Belotti and Mario Balotelli have been overlooked, meaning that Lorenzo Insigne is likely to play as false nine, flanked by Federico Chiesa and Federico Bernardeschi. In midfield, Daniele De Rossi is out through injury while Nicoloò Barella is in line to make his debut. Cristiano Biraghi may get the nod at left-back, altough Domenico Criscito is pushing to play in front of their own fans. Alessio Romagnoli, Danilo D'Ambrosio, Simone Zaza and Patrick Cutrone have all withdrawn from the squad.

Ukraine have made a perfect start to their UEFA Nations League

Ukraine may have gone four games unbeaten but also failed to make it to the World Cup in Russia. Anyway, Andryi Shevchenko's men are in great form at the moment, having not lost in their last seven in all competitions. They enter this clash on the back of three consecutive wins - a 4-1 friendly win in Albania was followed by a 2-1 away win against Czech Republic and a narrow 1-0 win at home over Slovakia in the first two UEFA Nations League matches. The Ukrainians have been pretty productive lately as they have scored seven times in the last three matches.

Changes may be kept to a minimum from the 1-0 win over Slovakia last time out. Andriy Shevchenko has called up defending duo Vasyl Kravets and Ihor Plastun for the first time after impressive starts to their seasons with Deportivo Lugo and Gent respectively. Experienced defender Yevhen Khacheridi is again a notable absentee for the visitors while Vitaliy Buyalskyi and Artem Besedin have withdrawn due to injury. Key players Andriy Yarmolenko, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Yevhen Konoplyanka and highly-rated goalkeeper Andriy Lunin have all been called and will certainly feature.
