Manchester City v Sheffield UTD betting preview

Man City have kept only one clean sheet in their last 14 matches

Manchester City began the weekend 14 points behind Liverpool after their bloody 3-2 defat at Wolves on Friday night, in which they threw away a two-goal lead and played almost 80 minutes with 10 men following Ederson’s red card. The Citizens have already dropped more points in the first half of this campaign than they did throughout the whole of the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. Pep Guardiola's men have won 25 of their last 29 home and, in general, they have bounced back quickly from previous setbacks, not losing successive matches since Boxing Day of last year.

Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson is suspended and will be replaced by Claudio Bravo. The likes of David Silva, Gabriel Jesus and John Stones are not 100% fit and should be rested. As a result, Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho should be paired at the heart of the back, with Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko likely to give Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy a breather as full backs. Raheem Sterling has barely had any rest in December but he is expected to lead the line alongside Sergio Aguero and Riyad Mahrez. Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane remain out.

Sheff UTD are the only side apart from Liverpool yet to lose on their travels

High-flying Sheffield United sit seventh after a home Boxing Day draw with Watford (1-1), a result that ended their three-game Premier League winning streak. They are level on points with Tottenham and ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal. Furthermore, they are unbeaten in 9 away matches in Premier League (W3 D6) and have no losses in their last 18 away league games since January. Plus, the Blades have kept three away clean sheets this season – more than any other team except Liverpool. There are no recent direct encounters as these two sides have not met in any competition since January 2008.

Chris Wilder said on Friday that many of his players would be assessed for fatigue. These comments may offer Ben Osborn, Luke Freeman and Mo Besic a glimmer of hope for a rare start in midfield but the likes of John Lundstram, John Fleck and Oliver Norwood remain favourites. Up front, Oli McBurnie and David McGoldrick could drop out, leaving Lys Mousset and Callum Robinson leading the line against the Citizens. No changes are expected in defense, where Jack O'Connell, John Egan and Chris Basham should form the three man backline. Phil Jagielka is the first in line for a start at centre-back if required.
