Liverpool v Newcastle Betting Preview
Liverpool will aim to erase the bitter taste of their Champions League exit against PSG on Tuesday as Arne Slot's men were beaten 4-1 on penalties in the last 16 second leg at Anfield after a 1-0 defeat in regular time. The Reds have also secured their 20th Premier League title as they lead the table with a 15 point gap over second-placed Arsenal. They qualified for the EFL Cup final by hammering Tottenham 4-0 in the second leg of their semi-final tie, after suffering a 1-0 defeat in North London. They will head to Wembley looking to defend their title, having beaten Chelsea here a year ago after extra-time.
Newcastle recorded a 1-0 away win over West Ham on Monday Night courtesy of a 63rd-minute goal from Bruno Guimarães, and now sit 5th in the Premier League table, two points shy of 4th placed Chelsea. As to the League Cup, the Magpies beat Arsenal in both legs of the semi-final to get to their second Carabao Cup final in two years. Anyway, they have never won the League Cup, most recently losing the 2023 final against Manchester United to prolong one one of the longest trophy droughts in British sport.
The Magpies have failed to beat the Reds in the last 17 direct encounters (D5 L12) and have lost the last four in a row. Liverpool eased to a 2-0 win in their most recent Premier League clash with Newcastle last month, though Eddie Howe was without the prolific striker Alexander Isak.
Best Odds
Newcastle head into this contest as underdogs at 4/1 (or 5.00), while Liverpool are 8/11 (1.70 on non-UK bookies) to win inside 90 minutes. The draw is a 31/10 chance with Bet365 and many new betting sites.
Team News & Probable Line-Ups
Liverpool (4-3-3): Kelleher; Quansah, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jota, Diaz
The Reds will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold, who sustained an injury in the Champions League game against PSG. Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are also expected to miss out, meaning that Jarell Quansah is expected to start at right-back. Ibrahima Konate was also substituted during that game, but Slot has confirmed the Frenchman will partner Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the back. Up front, Cody Gakpo returned off the bench against PSG and is back in contention. Caoimhin Kelleher may replace Alisson in goal.
Newcastle (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Barnes
Key player Anthony Gordon is suspended while defenders Lewis Hall, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are out through injury. Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento should start at left wing and left back respectively, with Kieran Trippier featuring from the off as right back. Brazilian duo Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton will partner Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park, with Jacob Murphy starting in the front trio.
Our Liverpool v Newcastle Predictions
Liverpool looked fatigued in recent weeks. Only a superb display from goalkeeper Alisson helped them pinch a 1-0 first-leg away win at Parc Des Princes, and then they were 1-0 down at Anfield against rock-bottom Southampton before two penalties scored by Mo Salah give them a 3-1 victory last weekend.
Newcastle will be fresher than their opponents as they had the whole week to prepare for this battle. Eddie Howe's men have been far from convincing on the defensive front but the likes of Murphy, Isak and Barnes have the potential to trouble Slot's depleted backline.
As a result, we believe regular time could finish in a scoring draw and we back 1-1 in the Correct Score market.
As to player betting, Harvey Barnes to score or assist looks a value bet.
