Manchester City v Liverpool Betting Preview
Man City will be hoping to put their midweek Champions League exit to Real Madrid behind them. Having lost the 1st leg 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola's men were soundly beaten 3-1 at the Bernabeu. Prior ot that, The Cityzens secured a convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle in the league, with Omar Marmoush recording his first career hat-trick. Anyway, since they trail league leaders Liverpool bu a whopping 17 points in the Premier League standings, their only hope of winning a trophy this season will come in the FA Cup. The priority, of course, will be sealing Champions League football for next season.
Liverpool did not play in Champions League, as they topped the League Phase table and automatically qualified for the last-16 round. As to the league, the Reds are still unbeaten in 22 league games since losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Anfield in September. They battled hard at Anfield to secure a 2-1 victory over Wolves last weekend but were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa on Wednesday night. As a result, Arne Slot's men entered this matchweek eight point clear of Arsenal - but they have played a game more.
As to direct encounters, Liverpool secured a 2-0 home victory in the reverse fixture at Anfeld earlier this season, thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. The last match at the Etihad ended in a 1-1 draw last season, courtesy of goals scored by Erling Haaland and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Three of the last four matches at the Etihad have ended all square with two 1-1 draws and a 2-2 draw in April 2022.
Best Odds
Liverpool are favourites to grab all three points at Etihad, with a best price of 5/4 with BetMGM (or 2.29 with non-UK bookmakers). Man City backers can get a quite high 41/20 with Unibet (or 3.05), with Parimatch offering the best price on the draw (3/1, or 4.00).
Probable Line-Ups
Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Gvardiol, Dias, Khusanov, Lewis; Gonzalez, Kovacic; Bernardo, De Bruyne, Foden; Marmoush
Erling Haaland was unable to play at the Bernabeu because of the knee injury picked up last week. The Norwegian striker is a major doubt. Should he miss, new signing Omar Marmoush is expected to play as false nine. Elsewhere, John Stones joined Manuel Akanji on the sidelines as he will be out for two to three months after limping off against Real Madrid. Abdukodir Khusanov started at right back on Wednesday but should be replaced by Rico Lewis, with the Uzbekistan international moving to centre-back alongside Ruben Dias. In midfield, Mateo Kovacic and Ilaky Gundogan are in contention to partner Nico Gonzalez.
Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Diaz, Jota
Joe Gomez has been ruled out for the majority of the season with a hamstring injury. Hopefully Ibrahima Konatè is fit again to partner Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the back as Jarell Quansah is the only other first-team centre-back. Cody Gakpo is a doubt after missing the match at Villa Park, so Luis Diaz will most likely be on the left, replacing Curtis Jones who started out wide last time out. Mohamed Salah is a certain striker, leaving Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez in contention for the remaining attacking berth.
Our Manchester City v Liverpool Predictions
Manchester City have lost just one of their last 15 home league against Liverpool, winning eight and drawing six.
Anyway, Pep Guardiola's team is completely different this season. They are struggling in all competitions - suffering already 13 defeats - and all departments. The 4-0 win over Newcastle marked the only clean sheet kept in the last 8 outings.
Liverpool are yet to lose on the road this season (W9 D5) and are the league's top scorers with 36 goals in 14 games.
Despite dropping points in each of their previous two away fixtures, we expect the Reds to secure a positive result at Etihad this Sunday.
We back Liverpool to win 3-1, with Mohamed Salah getting on the scoresheet.
Liverpool to score 3+ goals and Rico Lewis to be booked are other recommended bets.
