What is the King George VI Chase?
The feature race during Kempton's Christmas Festival is the King George VI Chase. This race is the second leg of chasing's Triple Crown, which also features the Betfair Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The King George VI Chase Staged at Kempton Park racecourse on Boxing Day (26th December).
This year's Ladbrokes King George VI Chase has attracted the biggest field since 2009 and looks quite wide open, with a range of horses in the mix.
Who is the favorite to win the King George VI Chase this year?
There are 11 runners in the King George VI Chase 2024, giving punters a pretty firm idea of how the race could shape up on Boxing Day.
This year's edition sees JP McManus' Spillane Tower and six-year-old Il Est Francais very close in the betting, with Banbridge and Grey Dawning their closest rivals.
L'Homme Press is another probable contender and could be a smart each-way option.
Many other possible contenders will miss the Kempton showpiece.
There’s no representation from Willie Mullins or Gordon Elliott, plus Nicky Henderson also goes without a runner in the 2024 renewal.
2024 KING GEORGE VI CHASE BETTING PREVIEW
JP McManus' SPILLANE TOWER is the red hot favorite of this year's renewal. He reappeared this term in the John Durkan back at the County Kildare venue and was narrowly beaten by Willie Mullins' Fact To File, with dual Gold Cup hero Galopin Des Champs just over two lengths behind.
Last season's Kauto Star Novices' Chase winner IL EST FRANCAIS returns here on the back of an unconvincing performance. He was pulled up in the Prix la Haye Jousselin last month after going off as favourite.
BANBRIDGE was off the pace on his reappearance in a Group 2 at Navan before unseating his rider in the Hilly Way Chase three weeks ago. He finished well beaten over hurdles in April 2022 on sole rules attempt at this sort of trip. He’s 1-1 at Kempton Park having seen off five-time Grade 1 winner Pic D’Ory in January.
Cheltenham Gold Cup contender GREY DAWNING leads the British charge. He wasn’t disgraced when finishing runner-up to course specialist Royale Pagaille in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on his comeback last month. The seven-year-old won over hurdles at this meeting in 2022, in his sole previous Kempton visit.
L'HOMME PRESSE returns from 286 days off the track. He was on course to run a huge race before unseating in 2022. Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch have been firing on all cylinders in the big races recent, so this horse should not be underestimate because of inactivity.
Winner of this race back in 2022, BRAVEMANSGAME finished second to Galopin Des Champs in last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup. He also finished second in this race to Hewick last year despite being hampered at the second last fence. Paul Nicholl's hasn't hit the same heights since but looks well overpriced at 14/1.
ENVOI ALLEN was disappointing in the King George two years ago but has racked up nine Grade 1 victories in his glorious carrer. Henry De Bromhead's charge is 10 years old now, but came back to his best when seeing off 2023 King George winner Hewick on his seasonal debut in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal in November.
CORBETTS CROSS won the National Hunt Chas and beat the 162-rated Found A Fifty over just shy of two miles as a novice hurdler last year. He also ran a cracker when finishing just behind Gold Cup runner-up Gerri Colombe at Aintree's Grand National Festival. He recorded a second at Wexford in Listed company on his return in October
JUNTO GANAMOS lines up for this British debut in the King George. He is only 5-year-old but has already won eight of his 14 races, including Grade 1 4yo chase in May 2023 and three Grade 3s since. He stayed on well in the Grade 1 Prix la Haye Jousselin at Auteuil last time out. Despite that, in our opinion, a significant amount of improvement is required to be a contender here.
THE REAL WACKER returned to winning ways in the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby last month, seeing off Bravemansgame. That was his first win since landing the 2023 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He has been supplemented here, meaning that connections are confident their horse can be in the mix.
GENERAL EN CHEF is priced around 50/1. A terrific price considering that his finished fourth in the Coral Gold Cup despite a couple of mistakes in tha run. Moreover, the French horse stayed the course better in May’s Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris.
