The Kansas City Chiefs overcame a late third quarter by the Bills (22-21) in the AFC Championship to win 32-29, courtesy of three touchdowns from Patrick Mahomes (one passing, two rushing). Pior to that, they finished the regular season with a 15-2 record, got a first-round bye, and eased past the Houston Texans in the playoffs.
The Chiefs are the first back-to-back champions to return to the Super Bowl, having won the past two Vince Lombardi trophies, and they are targeting an unprecedented ‘three-peat’ this year. It is also the fifth time in the last six season that the Mahomes & co. have reached the Big Game, winning three of the last five editions. They won the Super Bowl last season over San Francisco 25-22 in OT, and beat the Eagles two years ago 38-35.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles booked their place in the SB LIX with an impressive 55-23 win over No. 6 seed Washington Commanders in the NFC championship game, running all over their opponents for seven combined rushing touchdowns by Saquon Barkley (3), Jalen Hurts (3), and Will Shipley (1).
In previous play-off rounds they navigated their way past the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams. The Eagles have only lost three times this year (recording 14-3 in regular season), and are 15-1 in the last 16 games.
Moreover, Philadelphia own the league’s second-best rushing attack, led the NFL in carries and ranked second in both rushing yards and touchdowns, averaging nearly five yards per attempt. Their stars are the quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley – who broke the NFL record for rushing yards (2,005) in the regular season.
