TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW

Beginning in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne–home of the Opinel knife factory–the 177.5km stage takes the riders northwest toward a finish on the banks of the Rhône.

Two fourth category tests are unlikely to prompt any significant action. We firmly believe that almost all the sprinters will to survive the Cote du Cheval Blanc (1.5km at 4.3%) and Cote de Lhuis (3km at 4.8%).

The wide country roads of the final 30 kilometres seem ideal for chasing down any breakaways, with multiple sprint teams surely ready to do the work.

Positioning will be key with two roundabouts in quick succession just before the 2km-to-go mark. So, sprinters with strong leadouts might have the edge.

Monday’s sprint was a mess. Jasper Philipsen lost his key Alpecin Deceuninck lead-out man Mathieu van der Poel to a mechanical and was involved in a crash with two kilometres to go. Many other contenders were out of the mix that day.

That left Intermarche-Wanty’s Biniam Girmay to become the first Black African winner of a Tour de France stage when he outsprinted Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud De Lie to the finish line.

However, the sprint hierarchy on Wednesday could much different.

Stage 5 Favourites

Jasper Philipsen will be even more determined to prove his sprint dominance once again after missing out on the first chance and the best betting sites have installed the Belgium as the clear favorite here.

Biniam Girmay sprinted to a superb win on stage 3, proving that he is back to his winning form and will be a contender for the remaining sprint stages.

Movistar’s Fernando Gaviria and 22-year-old Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny) completed the podium that day and we are sure they will be in the mix once again.

They will fight with Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco Alula) for the Top 3 positions. The former has already shown he has enough power to compete with the fastest riders while the latter was in good position in the final 100 metres, but he was not able to unleash all his power because

Mark Cavendish is looking for that 35th stage victory but the Manx Missile doesn't look able to fight for the stage win.

Ireland’s Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), and the Netherlands’ Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich PostNL) are other sprinters that could target a top 3 finish, unless they struggle on the Cote de Lhuis with 34.6km to go.

Gerben Thijssen (Intermarché - Wanty), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) both looked strong in the first sprint and should have no problems with the two Cotes.
