Shakhtar Donetsk are on a seven-match winning run and have scored 13 goals in their last three games. Despite comfortably sitting at the top of the Ukrainian league table, they only prevailed by the odd goal in seven against Zorya Luhansk at the weekend, courtesy of a last-minute winner scored by Junior Moraes. Last year, the Miners suffered a heavy loss against Man City at home and recorded two draws with both Lyon and Hoffenheim. Dropped dwn in the Europa League, Shakhtar were beaten 6-3 on aggregate by Eintracht Frankfurt.  

Yevhen Konoplyanka may be preferred to Mateus Martins on the right-hand side of midfield. The Ukraininan international should complete the offensive midfield trio alongside Marlos and Taison, while Alan and Taras Stepanenko are likely to anchor the midfield. Viktor Kovalenko has returned to fitness in recent weeks and provide a further offensive option, as well as Brazilian forward Dentinho. The likes of Maksym Malyshev, Oleksandr Pikhalionk, Maycon and Andrii Totovytskyi are all ruled out through injury. Coach Luis Castro is likewise without the services of defender Davit Khocholava, who has a shoulder problem.

Man City slipped to a 3-2 defeat away to Norwich on Saturday and already trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 5 points, having dropped points also against Tottenham (2-2). Their defence is looking very vulnerable as they are short of bodies at centre-half since they failed to make any high-profile signing in that position. As to direct encounters, these clubs meet in the Champions League group stage for the third consecutive season. The Citizens proved a class apart from Shakhtar Donetsk during last season’s Champions League group stage, prevailing 6-0 at home and 3-0 in the Ukraine.

Sergio Aguero is expected to get the nod over Gabriel Jesus once again, with the Argentine probably flanked by Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling.
