SLOVENIA vs SCOTLAND BETTING PREVIEW
Slovenia can still reach the play-off even though they were beaten 1-0 against England after a late Harry Kane goal on Thursday. They have been a very hard nut to crack in front of the home fans as they managed to earn three wins and a draw (0-0 against England) in four qualifying games so far. Srecko Katanec's men have recorded six consecutive clean sheets at home in World Cup qualification.
Key midfielder Kevin Kampl misses out through injury while Valter Birsa and Rene Krhin are banned after picking up yellow cards at Wembley. Jasmin Kurtic and Rajko Rotman are expected to start in midfield, while Josip Ilicic, Benjamin Verbic and Roman Bezjak will play in a more offensive position behind the lone striker Andraz Sporar. As goalkeeper, Jan Oblak is expected to retain his starting berth over Inter Milan's star Samir Handanovic.
Scotland enter this game on a three-match winning streak as they have beaten Lithuania (0-3), Malta (2-0), and Slovakia (1-0) with no goals conceded in the process. They currently sit in second place in Group F with 17 points, two points ahead of Slovakia and three points ahead of Slovenia after their incredible last minute win over Slovakia last time out. They they book their place in the play-offs with a victory in Slovenia. A draw will be enough if Slovakia slip-up, but a defeat will see Scotland fall at the final hurdle. The Tartan Army bagged a narrow 1-0 home win in the sides’ first head-to-head encounter this campaign.
Matt Ritchie has withdrawn from the Scotland squad with a slight injury while captain Darren Fletcher should play despite suffering an ear injury last time out. This means that manager Gordon Strachan is likely to field an unchanged lineup in Ljubljana. Anyway, he could decide to go two up top after Derby Country striker Chris Martin came off the bench and did well against Slovakia. Club teammate Ikechi Anya also did well off the bench and could be pushing for a place in the side.
