UKRAINE v NORTHERN IRELAND BETTING PREVIEW
Ukraine was blanked by reigning World Cup champions Germany, 0-2, in their opener on Sunday. Anyway, Mikhail Fomenko’s team might well have come away with more than just a 2-0 defeat. Thursday’s clash now looks do-or-die for Ukraine if they are to make it through to the last-16 at Euro 2016.
Ukraine are likely to keep faith with their trusted 4-2-3-1 formation. With wingers Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka providing the attacking impetus, one potential change could come in the centre of the midfield where Taras Stepanenko may be partnered with either Denis Garmash or Sergiy Rybalka. Viktor Kovalenko may earn a reprieve though with a move into the lone striker role though Fomenko could opt to bench him in favour of Roman Zozulya
Northern Ireland ended their 12-game unbeaten run in international matches against Poland after being beaten 2-0 in their Euro 2016 opening game. They have shown that they can defend well and deep but they took few chances, lacking any sort of cutting edge in the final third. They failed to register a single shot on target against Adam Nawalka’s men. And we don't expect a lot of goals here - the last two meetings between Northern Ireland and Ukraine have ended in goalless draws.
Jamie Ward and Conor Washington are in contention be recalled to support Kyle Lafferty up front. Craig Catchart overcame a knock to start last time out and is fine to continue at the back against Ukraine on Thursday. As consequence, Paddy McNair is expected to be benched.
