Uruguay are extremely solid in defence. Cavani may miss the game

Uruguay eliminated European champions Portugal in the last round with a convincing 2-1 win and maintained their 100% record at this World Cup. Pepe's header in that match was La Celeste's first conceded goal at this year's World Cup. In the group stage Uruguay kept three clean sheets, beating 1-0 Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and hammering Russia 3-0. The last time they won four consecutively from their opening game, Uruguay went on to lift the trophy in 1930. In terms of direct matches, Uruguay and France have met 5 times this century overall with four 0-0 draws and a 1-0 Uruguay win in a 2013 friendly.

Edinson Cavani is the only injury worry for Oscar Tabarez heading into the game. The striker, who scored a brace against Portugal, suffered a calf injury and may miss out. Anyway, Tabarez has some decent attacking options in reserve with both Cristhian Stuani and Maxi Gomez fresh from excellent seasons in La Liga. Lucas Torreira, Rodrigo Bentancur and Nahitan Nandez should play in central midfield, while the back four are likely to remain unchanged- Diego Godin and Josè Jimenez centre backs, Diego Laxalt and Martin Caceres full backs.

As to the Group stage, France topped their group by collecting 7 points, courtesy of wins over Australia (2:1) and Peru (1:0) and a goalless draw against Denmark in the final game.

Blaise Matuidi is ruled out of the game due to suspension, but France are likely to appeal. Ousmane Dembele will hope to profit with a start, meaning that Paul Pogba will play in the middle of the park laongside N'Golo Kantè. Other than that, Didier Deschamps is not expected to make any unforced changes from the side that started against Argentina. Olivier Giroud will lead the line once again, supported by Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappè. In defense, Djibril Sidibe is still an injury doubt but isn't first-choice. Samuel Umtiti was fit enough to start against Argentina in the round of 16 and will continue in defence for France here.
