Belgium vs Canada Betting Preview
Belgium are under pressure to produce a decent display in Qatar as defeats in Euro 2020 and the previous Nations League's finals have caused discontent among supporters. For the Red Devils this represents the final chance for a lot of their 'Golden Generation' to win a major tournament. Four years ago, Belgium were knocked out of the tournament by France in the semi-finals, before beating England 2-0 in the third-place playoff. Losing home and away to neighbours Netherlands recently did not go down well either, plus a defeat to Egypt in a international friendly means they have lost back-to-back matches.
Bayern Munich speedster Alphonso Davies and Lille hotshot Jonathan David inspired Canada to qualification for the first time in 36 years. They enter the 2022 FIFA World Cup high on confidence having topped the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group, two places above big rivals USA. The Maple Leafs scored the most number of goals, conceded the least and played brilliant football. They have recently beaten Japan 2-1 in a pre-tournament friendly and could be the surprise package of Qatar 2022.
Best Odds
UK betting sites see Roberto Martinez's men heavy favorites for this clash. Belgium are 3/5 to win the match (best odds at VBet). Canada are 11/2 with Betfred, while the draw is priced at 17/5 with SpreadEx.
Probable Line-Ups
Belgium (3-4-3): Courtois; Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Dendoncker; Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, Castagne; De Bruyne, Batshuayi, E. Hazard
Romelu Lukaku is out injured for this game so Michy Batshuayi is expected to spearhead Belgium's attack, with Lois Openda also an option. Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne will support the lone striker while Thorgan Hazard is not 100% fit and could sit on the bench. The likes of Timothy Castagne and Thomas Meunier will probably start as wing backs, with Alex Witsel and Youri Tielemans anchoring the midfield. The likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Leander Dendoncker will form a ver yexperienced three man backline. Zeno Debast provides a further option, as Dedryck Boyata and Jason Denayer missed out on the squad.
Canada (3-4-3): Borjan; Johnston, Steven Vitoria, K. Miller; Davies, Laryea, Hutchinson, Eustaquio; David, Larin, Buchanan
Canada coach John Herdman has no injury troubles to deal with ahead of this game as Alphonso Davies should recover in time from a harmstring injury. Cyle Larin and Jonathan David - who has already bagged nine goals in just 15 games for Lille this season - will be paired up front as usual. They will be supported by Tajon Buchanan, who play for Club Brugge as well as Larin. The likes of Alphonso Davies and Richie Laryea will start as wing backs, with Atiba Hutchinson and Stephen Eustaquio starting in the middle of the park.
Belgium v Canada Predictions
Canada is an extremely talented team but lack in experience. Despite they will mainly use this tournament to prepare for the 2026 World Cup on home soil, we expect the Maple Leafs to cause one or two upsets.
The Canadians will look to play compact and hit quickly on the counterattack and we expect them to punish an ageing Belgian defense.
As a result, we back "Canada +2 Handicap" and both teams to score.
The match can end with an entertaining 2-2 scoreline and we also recommend Jonathan David as anytime goalscorer.
