2022 World Cup Favorites
In total, 32 countries will compete for the ultimate prize on football’s grandest stage, but who are favorites to lift the cup and which of the outsiders could spring a surprise? Let's take a closer look...
BRAZIL
Five-time winners Brazil are the outright favourites according to the top and new betting sites in UK. The Seleçao have won five World Cups with their most recent victory in 2002.
They boast an excellent squad and some electric attacking players (Neymar, Vinicius Jr, Raphinha and Gabriel Jesus above all) but have been drawn in a tough group with two solid European teams such as Switzerland and Serbia, and the AFCON 2022 semi-finalist Cameroon.
Moreover, should they escape the Grroup H, Tite's men will likely face either Portugal or Uruguay in the last-16 round, Spain or Germany in the quarter finals.
FRANCE
Holders France enter this winter’s competition as reigning champions having defeated Croatia 4-2 in the final in Russia back in 2018. Only two nations have won back-to-back World Cups so far.
They also tasted victory at the Nations League in 2021, beating Spain in the final.
Les Bleus possess the strongest squad on paper by some distance, with incredible depth in nearly every position. Kylian Mbappè and the 2022 Ballon D'Or Karim Benzema will lead the pack, while N'Golo Kantè has been ruled out and Paul Pogba remains a major doubt as he is still struggling with an injury.
Didier Deschamps' men have been drawn in a tricky group containing Denmark, who beat them both home and away in the recent Nations League.
ARGENTINA
Recent victories have lifted Argentina as third favorite to win the World Cup. The Albiceleste has won last year's Copa America (the first success in a major tournament for their skipper Leo Messi) and are enjoying a 35 match unbeaten streak, with their last defeat back to July 2019.
They have been drawn in the Group C, alongside Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia.
Lionel Messi will be hoping to land the one major honour that has so far eluded him in a remarkable career while the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala will be a terrific supporting cast.
ENGLAND
Gareth Southgate's England made their way to the semi-finals at Russia 2018, before reaching a final on home soil at Euro 2020 (the tournament was played in 2021) when they lost on penalties to Italy.
However, a miserable run of results in the Nations League may have affected confidence and that has caused their World Cup 2022 winner odds to drift.
The Three Lions failed to win a single match in that competition (suffering two heavy defeats at the hands of Hungary) and were relegated in the League B.
Gareth Southgate was very close to be sacked. Anyway, England are proven major tournaments operators under the current manager, with his conservative style paying dividends in one-off games for the most part.
Should they manage to escape their (easy) group, France will likely await in the quarter-finals.
SPAIN
Spain have performed well in both the Nations League - they lost to France in the final - and the delayed Euro 2020, where they finished third. An impressive World Cup qualifying campaing confirmed that Luis Enrique’s side are full of talented youngsters (including Barcelona's Gavi and Pedri) and could surprise everyone in Qatar.
Their style of play, based on ball possession, could be very helpful if the weather in Qatar is still humid in winter months.
La Roja will probably fight with Germany to qualify as group winners, while Japan and Costa Rica should not be undersestimated due to their athletical skills.
GERMANY
Germany always command respect at major tournaments. Die Mannschaft looked rejuvenated since Hansi Flick replaced Joachim Low as manager. They have secured nine wins out of 10 in qualifying and put behind them their recent struggles at the 2018 World Cup and last year's Euros.
Die Mannschaft have a very talented squad with Leroy Sanè, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz above all.
Their clash with Spain will tell us a lot about how Germany will fare in this year’s World Cup.
Dark Horses and Possible Surprises
Netherlands failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup before being knocked out of Euro 2020 by the Czech Republic. They have rebuilded since Louis Van Gaal was appointed as manager and will arrive in Qatar with little pressure and plenty of talent at their disposal.
The Oranje are probably one tournament awy from peaking, but we expect them to comfortably reach the knockout stages and play their cards against every opponent.
Uruguay have an eye-catching roster. They struggled in CONMEBOL qualifying but since they replaced veteran Oscar Tabarez with the younger Diego Alonso they started to play brilliant football and reached the World Cup finals with impressive performances.
They have been drawn in group H with Portugal, Ghana and South Korea - a very levelled group in which every nation have ambitions to progress.
Having players with plenty of experience in Premier League and La Liga - Luis Suarez, Darwin Nunez, Federico Valverde, Edinson Cavani and Rodrigo Betancur - Uruguay have good possibilities to cause major upsets this year.
Switzerland are a very solid team. La Nati pipped Italy in their World Cup qualifying campaign and managed to knock-out France at the Euros, proving they can be a tough nut to crack and the dark horse for this winter tournament. We would not be suprirse if Switzerland have their best World Cup ever in Qatar.
Denmark impressed in qualifying with nine wins out of 10 and only three goals conceded. They also performed well in the UEFA Nations League, beating World Cup champions France twice (although they lost twice at the hands of Croatia). The Danes welcomed back their best player - Christian Eriksen - after a near-tragic episode at the European Championship and have a consolidated team. Surely, they will not win the World Cup because they lack in depth, but we expect Denmark to escape the Group Stage and probably cause troubles to other World Cup contenders.
Strugglers and Teams To Avoid
Portugal managed to qualify for Qatar 2022 by beating Montenegro in the play-offs after finishing runner-up to Serbia in qualifying. At age of 37, Cristiano Ronaldo is past his prime while the new recruits - Rafael Leao, Rafa Silva, Joao Felix - are extremely talented but lack the experience to shine on the biggest stage.
In the last two World Cup edition, Belgium reached the quarter-finals in Brazil and then finished third in Russia. Anyway, the Golden Generation has failed to make expectations and many key players have been below par in the previous years. Romelu Lukaku has played few games with Inter Milan this year after a terrible 2021/22 season at Chelsea, while Eden Hazard has literally disappeared since joining Real Madrid.
Who Will Win the World Cup 2022? Our Betting Tips...
With 32 teams set to battle it out for the 2022 World Cup, you may be struggling to pick a favourite.
Given the hectic, crammed schedule we have seen this term, a strong, deep squad could prove vital. France, England and Brazil all excel in depth. And we expect one of these three teams to reach the World Cup final. The other finalist could be Argentina. The Albiceleste has plenty of attacking talent. Plus, they are high on confidence after winning the Copa America and enter the tournament on the back of a 35-match unbeaten streak - something that has proved to be pivotal both at the last World Cup and European Championship (can you remember when we tipped Italy to win the Euros??).
As a result, we back France or Argentina to win the World Cup. Of course you can also bet on these two teams to contest the tournament showpiece at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on 18th December.
